1972-1980 VIN style

99762XXXXXX
This one is really simple.

The first two digits are the car series: 95, 96, 97, 99, 90 (for 900).

The next two digits are the last two digits of the model year: 72 = 1972, etc.

The fifth digit is the manufacturing plant:
The 6th through 12th digits are the serial # of that model on that line.

1981-1983 VIN style

This marked the first year for the international 17 digit VIN code. It keeps all manufacturers on the same playing field, and you can identify make, model, and some equipment off of a VIN.

YS3AT34S2B1XXXXXX

The first three digits are the country and manufacturer code.
YS3 is used for cars made in Sweden
YK1 is used for cars made in Finland

The next digit is the car model.
The 5th digit is the series.
The 6th digit is the Body Type or the number of doors
The 7th digit is the Engine type
The 8th digit is for Safety equipment

Note: I doubt anything other than 'S' was used here, as Passives and Airbags were not introduced until after the VIN spec was changed.

The 9th digit is a check digit, which will be 0-9 or X. No meaning, other than to make sure it is a valid VIN.

The 10th digit is the Model Year. Position 11 is the assembly plant or line
Lastly, positions 12 through 17 are the serial number of that model on that line.

1984-1985 VIN style

A few changes for the international 17 digit VIN code. Position 7 becomes the transmission type, and 8 becomes the engine type. Also, all Saabs use the same manufacturer code.

YS3AT35S9E1XXXXXX

The first three digits are the country and manufacturer code.
YS3 is used for Saab cars

The next digit is the car model.
The 5th digit is the series.
The 6th digit is the Body Type or the number of doors
The 7th digit is the Transmission type
The 8th digit is the Engine type

The 9th digit is a check digit, which will be 0-9 or X. No meaning, other than to make sure it is a valid VIN.

The 10th digit is the Model Year. Position 11 is the assembly plant or line
Lastly, positions 12 through 17 are the serial number of that model on that line.

YS3AT35S9E1XXXXXX

The first three digits are the country and manufacturer code.

The 5th digit is the series.
Sometime after 1986, this was changed to "For Internal Use Only". Probably as a result of a myriad of models sold around the world.

The 6th digit is the Body Type or the number of doors
Note the missing 5-door

The 7th digit is the Transmission type
The 8th digit is the Engine type

The 9th digit is a check digit, which will be 0-9 or X. No meaning, other than to make sure it is a valid VIN.

The 10th digit is the Model Year. Position 11 is the assembly plant or line
Lastly, positions 12 through 17 are the serial number of that model on that line.
